By Rachel W.
My name is Rachel W. I am a 14 year old water polo player in high school in San Jose, California.
For me, water has always been more than just a place to swim. It’s shaped my activities and hobbies and interests, as well as the way I think about the community and the environment around me.
As a longtime swimmer and water polo player, I’ve spent a lot of time in and around the water. Naturally, I’ve become curious about how to protect it, too. That’s what led me to develop a pool chemistry project investigating water quality, pH levels, and alkalinity in swimming pools. What was once a simple question turned into an opportunity to explore more environmental science through hands-on research.
My interest in water has also extended to helping others, teaching younger children how to swim and play water polo and doing beach cleanups. Through these experiences, I’ve found more ways to combine my passion for water related sports with service and mentorship. All of these moments are connected by a simple idea: water is worth protecting.
I hope to continue expanding my water-quality research, teach more kids to swim, participate in environmental initiatives, and inspire other people to take action in their own communities.
