Hypothesis

I think that humans are currently in the lead because first, AI hasn’t evolved that much and secondly, sometimes Artificial Intelligence gives a very detailed reply but it is completely wrong. Also, at the bottom of the OpenAI website, it says, “ChatGPT can make mistakes. Consider checking important information.”

Method

Materials:

  • Access to ChatGPT 4
  • Access to ChatGPT 3.5
  • Math League 2024 February Qualifier Target set 12425

Process:

  1. I gave them each a set of 8 math problems
  2. I compared the result to those of the student who competed

Observations

ChatGPT 4 and 3.5 both can’t solve problems with diagrams or not very well at least. ChatGPT 4 can solve problems very well with high accuracy but isn’t the best with diagram problems. ChatGPT 3.5 can’t read graphs or diagrams overall and has a decent accuracy.

Both ChatGPT 3.5 and 4 didn’t solve #1 & #3.

Took ChatGPT 3.5 three tries to get #6 right.

Both take a lot of steps to get the final answer even if there is an easier way.

Interaction Experiences

  • Working with ChatGPT 4 went pretty smooth. It went quickly but ChatGPT still took a while to solve the problems.
  • The process of working with ChatGPT 3.5 was frustrating. After I typed the question, ChatGPT 3.5 would occasionally keep asking for information that would help give away answer.

Acknowledgements

I would like to acknowledge/thank

  • All the students that participated in the February Qualifier
  • Math League for supplying the questions
  • ChatGPT 4 and ChatGPT 3.5 for participating
  • My parents sponsoring me and letting me use ChatGPT 4 for this project

If ChatGPT is better at math then me, do I need to study math?

My answer:

Yes, practicing math is crucial; if ChatGPT excels more, consider learning tips from it, as maths applications are everywhere in life!

ChatGPT’s answer:

Absolutely, even if someone is better at math, a fifth grader should still study it because math is a fundamental skill that improves with practice and is essential for many aspects of life.

Conclusion

Currently, people think I’m so great at math right? Well, that may change soon. ChatGPT evolving rapidly—from version 3.5 to 4 in just a few months and with a notable improvement—it’s clear that AI’s academic capabilities are advancing quickly. In fact, the release of ChatGPT 5 may be just around the corner. AI may become better than us in academics yet, there are many things that ChatGPT will never be able to replace us in. It can not replace friendship, sympathy, collaboration, and many more. I look forward to competing against ChatGPT in Language Arts!
