Why making a game is hard for AI

AI tools can now write computer code, but making a whole video game is still too hard for them. In the toughest tests, the best AI finishes only about half of the jobs it is given.
Why? A game is not just code. It also needs art (like characters and backgrounds), a game engine to run everything, and it has to actually work when someone plays it. An AI can write code that looks fine but still makes a character fall through the floor.
To measure how good AI really is at this, scientists build benchmarks. A benchmark is like a standardized test for AI: the same set of tasks, graded the same way, so different AIs can be compared fairly.
Key words
- AI agent: an AI that can take actions on its own, like opening files, writing code and running programs.
- Benchmark: a fixed set of test tasks used to score and compare AIs.
- Game engine: the software that runs a game, handling graphics, physics and controls. Examples: Godot, Unity, Unreal.
- Sprite: a 2D picture used in a game, like a character or a coin.

Code alone is not enough: if any one of these parts is wrong, the game breaks.
